How to teach my child how to deal with emotions - get to know their heart and mind

What does self-awareness mean for kids?

Have you ever tried to understand a kid (I mean under 10 years) during a highly emotional moment and were only left feeling highly emotional yourself and that nobody really understood each other to help each other? If you have had a closely similar moment, so have I and I would like to talk about it.

Honestly for me, the thing that keeps me somewhat at peace in those moments is is to remember, they are only children - they have not learned how to deal with emotions yet, and honestly, I am still practicing too.

Personally, I learned how to deal with my ups and downs by practicing self-awareness and mindfulness. (Read more on what mindfulness is and ideas on how to practice!) If you have also discovered the life changing benefits of mindful living, you may be wondering, how do I teach my child mindfulness and self-awareness?

There are several ways that kids can relate to and I would like to point out a world famous kid favorite: COLORING

Mindful Coloring for Kids

It is common knowledge that you can not go wrong with coloring or art with kids (under 10). Creativity and self-expression is how their brains learn at this stage. It can also be a relaxing way for kids to get in touch with their emotions. Getting in touch with how you are feeling is the first step to becoming self-aware. Self-awareness for kids means that they can name a feeling and that they can think about how to respond. Mindful coloring is an enjoyable way to help children pin point their emotions using feelings charts.

It is pretty easy to gather coloring supplies and just color your heart away but I would like to introduce the idea of trying mood trackers (also called ‘feelings charts’) for kids. Mood tracking is a method of recording one’s feeling’s regularly on a chart, to see the patterns and cope better or improve them.

Coloring in a mood tracker can be one of self-care activities for kids daily to help them know and deal with their emotions

Here is an sample page of what a kid’s mood tracking coloring page looks like:

One of the greatest benefits of trying a mood tracker with your kid is that you start to get to know them and they start to open up to you. I hope this daily habit idea is a good fit for you and your loves!
